Head Coach Matt Girard

My experience as a swimmer and coach started with the Richmond Kigoos, but I have found a new home with the Mighty, Mighty Sunfish. I am enthused to be your Head Coach and look forward to getting to know all of you. In my fifteen years of competitive swimming, I have developed a love for the sport and I am very passionate about sharing what I know with other swimmers. I am devoted to doing everything I can to help swimmers succeed. I am one of those coaches that will stay after practice for as long as it takes to help any swimmer master a technique. Over the years I have coached a variety of swimmers from young to old. I am a volunteer swim coach with the Special Olympics, as well as with my old high school swim team. I have also volunteer coached with the Pacific Dolphins at UBC. This past winter at UBC, I finished up my third year in Kinesiology. I like to bring everything I am learning about how the human body handles under pressure and apply it in my coaching. I am excited for what’s shaping up to be a fun and challenging summer. See you on deck!

Coach Bernard Grempel

My name is Berny (Bernard) Grempel and I have been counting down the days until the pool opens up for practices. I started swimming with the Sunfish when I was 6 years old and haven’t missed a summer since. It's hard to believe that I've been swimming for 14 years now; time just flies when you're having fun. I have coached with the club for last 4 years during the summer season and winter maintenance programs. This will be my second summer as a Senior Coach and I am excited about all the opportunities it brings. Over the years, I have been very privileged to have many amazing coaches and am looking forward to sharing what I have learned with all the kids. I can’t wait to see all the familiar faces and meet all the new swimmers. See you at the pool!

Coach Turner Marsh

Hi, my name is Turner Marsh. I have been involved with the Sunfish since I was about 4 years old. I started off as a Little Fishy and ended up competing at a high level representing the Sunfish at the provincial championships. Through it all, I remember the friends and the fun. This is my first year as a senior (group) coach. For the past two years I was a junior (little fishies) coach, I volunteer coached for a couple of seasons before that. I am excited about the upcoming season and look forward to having the opportunity to work with the other coaches to develop the Sunfish swimmers. See you at the pool! Turner

Coach Jenifer Gleed

Hey! My name is Jenifer. I just finished my university degree this past winter and will be graduating this June with my Bachelors of Arts in English. I have been swimming with the BCSSA from the age of 7-16 then started coaching. Swimming has become a part of my life and something I love doing. I have learned a lot about the sport from the coaches I had, plus the number of coaches I have worked with, which I hope to continue to pass on to my fellow swimmers. This will be my second year coaching with the Sunfish and has been by far the best team to be a part of and to coach. I cannot wait for this summer season to start and to see all the familiar Sunfish faces, as well as the newcomers out on the pool deck.

Coach Nicole Schneider
Hi! I’m Nicole Schneider and this is my first year coaching with the Sunfish! Although I am new to this region, I have been part of the BCSSA since the age of 9. I swam competitively until I was 16 and then I began coaching, which I really love. I swam and coached on the island but I recently moved to the mainland and so it’s time to turn the page and explore a new club! I am finishing my final year of my teaching degree at the University of Victoria. I had my final practicum at North Delta Secondary and so I have had a bit of a taste of the North Delta community. I am excited to meet some people in the community and get to see the summer swimming side of North Delta! On top of coaching, I am also a fitness instructor and I am passionate about health and wellness, which I try to bring into my coaching. I have loved my experience with the BCSSA and I can’t wait to be back at the pool and get to know the Sunfish swimmers! Email:

Coach Jillian Welch

Hi, my name is Jillian and I am a Junior Coach for the Little Fishies. You may have seen me coaching during the winter maintenance session, but this is my first summer coaching, and my 10th summer swimming with the club! I love working with kids and I have a passion for aquatics, which is why I love teaching swimming. Alongside coaching, I am also a Lifeguard and Instructor for the City of Burnaby, and have had experience in the past teaching red cross swimming lessons. My main focus for my lessons are to personalize them for each swimmer so that everyone has fun and learns all the skills needed to be a great swimmer. See you around at the pool!
